Default One off Pace Cars

Does anyone have any info or rumors on one off 78 pace cars? There is someonewithin 50 miles of me that claims that the 78 Pace Car convertable he has is real. Were there any drop top 78's built for any of the GM brass?

One-off pace cars? A 1978 Convertible?

Sounds fishy to me. I'd want some solid documentation up front, not just a story teller.

Maybe the guy doesn't know the diff. between T-tops and a convertible? I have seen that mistake before, saying "convertible" when it should have said "T-tops".

It's news to me. Never heard of anything like a Pace Car roadster back then.

That's what I thought too. A friend of mine that has a body shop and repairs a lot of classic Vettes and other muscle cars and wanted me to check because he had never heard of one either. He was contacted by someone that says he has a 78 convertable pace car and would like him to do the restoration. I told Mike that I did not believe there was ever a convertable 78 of any kind. Another friend of mine has all original78 Pace Car, 4 speed, w/air, with the removable roof panels. He has done a ton of research on these cars and he has never heard of any such thing either. The car in question is in Missouri not too far from the old St. Louis plant. I wondered if it was an experimental car that GM forgot to destroy.

Try to get a pic. I've heard of folks converting a T-top to a drop top. Gotta be expensive. []

I will try to get pics if the owner has Mike do the job. I agree that a conversion would be fairly expensive. The cheapest way would be to use the birdcage and tub from a 68 to 75 drop top and the front and rear clips from a 78.
