Welcome to the forum.

Trying to get a passenger car unit to fit would probably be an exercise in futility. Your best bet would be to look into getting a Vintage Air system to put in it. I took a system out of a wrecked 73 Corvette and put it into my 73 and it was not easy but doable.
I believe on the automatic cars there is a cable that connects to the steering column that will allow the key to be removed when the transmission is put into Park. Check into that and see if the cable is both there and connected and possibly adjusted properly.
