Qjets have spread bore, while most Holleys have square bore. There are only a couple carbs from Holley that you can use without an adapter plate. I used a Street Avenger 670 (based on the 4150 series), polished and pretty on my 81. Unfortunately, with the adapter plate, I didn't have clearance for the hood, even without an air cleaner. I used a Holley Free Flow air cleaner, and switched to a Stinger style hood with a scoop for clearance.

These will fit:

I have performer manifold w/ qjet now. will holley 80555 fit w/o changing hood. I
would like to change carb and keep stock air cleaner. Edlebrock has a 1405 but I
am not familiar w/ edelbrock carbs. thanks for prev. reply. I am also thinking
about using Fluiddampener harmonic balancer. any thoughts?

According to Holley, the 80555 will fit just fine. The bore is correct, and the clearance is supposed to be very close to the Qjets.

Edelbrock carbs are very good as well. I've had excellent experience with them in the past.

In both cases, call their tech support line for info on clearances and air cleaner fit. If you check with them first, they will back up the sale if things don't go together as planned. In my experience, they both provide excellent advice and info.

bill.
