Remote Oil Filter

Remote Oil Filter
I was wondering if a remote oil filter would allow me to filter allmy motor oil. I have tried to use a truck filter (holds 2 quarts), but I have limited clearance sue to my exhaust system. If this is the way to go, what systemwould be a good one to go with?

RE: Remote Oil Filter
I've used several. Holley, AMSoil, Permacool, and alot of the marine engine makers (Mercruiser, Crusader, etc.) have good kits. Most of them work by using an adapter where the oil filter is now, and just using a hose to and from the remote filter. I have seen some that use a "free flow canister" to replace the filter, and get the oil from the oil pressure sending unit tap, returning it to the pan when it is clean (AMS uses this setup).

If you want to filter 100% of the pump output you'll first have to block the by-pass valve in the oil filter adapter, it's a spring loaded disk that opens & closes according to resistance through the oil circuit. I would'nt recommend total block-off but you can use a stiffer spring or experiment with plugging and drilling the opening, just make sure to use a filter that can handle the increased volume & pressure.

If you block off or restrict the filter bypass valve, you risk starving the engine for oil if filter gets plugged or blowing the canister off of the filter. I've heard of some Fram filters that wouldn't take over ~60 psi.

RE: Remote Oil Filter
The old school small block oil system is the most dependable fool proof system used, if your running stock engine internals or a mild up-grade in horses the factory system is good for 500hp, if you start messing with high volume and/or high pressure you could have some oil control issues, GM put in alot of hours on R&D over the years, it's hard to beat the factory if your running a street engine.
