Just think I was going to put off changing my cam and heads until closer to summer when the weather was nicer. Glad I didn't, because when I got the whole thing apart, I discovered that the harmonic balancer was in the process of walking itself off the end of the crank! It was almost separated, just imagine was kinda damage this coulda done if I would not have found it!

Glad you cought that now, did you see the one on PINKS where the guy lost the HB at the starting line but continued the race? He blew the whole engine a few hundred feet down the track. PG.

None of the bolts hold the two halves of the balancer together, the rubber ring has the job of keeping the inner and outer iron pieces together. The single bolt in the center holds the inner hub to the crank, three smaller bolts only hold the pulley's on. Good job seeing that Clayton.

Now I'm confused. Was the center one that holds it on the crank, loose or MIA?

The bolts that hold the crank pulley on were all loose, the HB bolt that goes into the crank snout was REALLY lose, I mean, I've done 6 cam changes and never had one come off as easy as this one did.

Ha, I try not to watch the show Pinks, it makes me kinda sick to my stomach watching a Jerry Springer for car guys, but what someone really want to win a car that exploded a few hundred feet down the track? I mean, I got a blown up car sittin' in my yard that I will give ya!

Anyway, I got anew Pioneer HB from Advance for $50, its weird seeing a new one...A few years backI accidentally pulled the one off mysecondengine installin-half because I used a gear puller, that pulled the outside ring off while leaving the center ring firmly pressed onto the crank, and I happened to find a replacement in a pile-O-balancers at the junkyard for 10 bucks! Ever since then I've always been scared of the "its time to pull the balancer off" part of the cam change. I would love to fab my own 2 piece timing cover now that I have the tools, but every time I put a cam incar, I just leave it, because if I get sick of it, I usually just get another car... thats how I ended up with a Corvette... go figure...

A HB puller is a relatively inexpensive tool to get. Also two-piece timing covers aren't terribly expensive.

The whole thesis of Pinks is a joke. Like someone is going to bet their car with no timing lites and some bozo at the finish line that is going to determine winner based upon his view. [sm=badidea.gif]
