Default speedometer

my C3, 1974, speedometer does not work. The tach works fine. How do I get the speedometer to work again. Any help out there would be great.

As I recall, the speedos are all cable drive. You could have a broken cable. The cable is in a sleeve that runs from the tranny to the speedo.
You can disconnect it from the tranny and pull the inner cable out.

It's a bitch getting under the dash.
Might find pulling the drivers seat out will make it easier for you.

On my '73, I had to pull the cable out from the speedo end as there is a flange on it that prevents it from coming out at the tranny end. [:@]

BTW, welcome to the Corvette forum.

By gollly 73shark,....that's right. [sm=bangbang.gif]
If the cable is broken inside the sleeve, you'd have to pull it out from both ends though.[:'(]

....and yes orangevette, welcome to CF!

Check the drive gear on the tranny before you go to all the trouble of pulling the cable. The gears are nylon and they do wear out. Make sure you get the right one, the 22 tooth tan one is for stock sized tires. Get the wrong one and you might see some blue lights in your rear view... speaking from experience...

The driven gear (nylon) on a '73 4 speed with the stock GR-70 tires was a 22 tooth (P/N 3987922) for a 4.11 rear gear. The 3.70 used a 20 tooth (P/N 3987920), 3.56 used a 19 tooth (P/N 3987919), and 3.36 used a 18 tooth (P/N 3987918).

Disclaimer: these P/Ns are from a Chevy Parts catalog circa 1976, so they might have to be updated by your parts guy or they may no longer be available. []

C3: Good catch, I missed the part about broken, was just thinking about removing an intact cable.
