Starting car in Park???
Hello, I am not sure that I am doing this right as this is my first time here?
I have a 76 stingray auto transmission and my problem is the car will not start in Park?....I always have to put it in Nutural.
What is the problem and can I fix it myself.....hopefully!!!

RE: Starting car in Park???
Hi iccats and welcome to the forum. The neutral safety switch is under the shifer console and may be out of adjustment. Get a Haynes Repair Manual at the auto store and look at page 7B-3, it's an easy adjustment and one of the few things thatwon't cost money to fix. PG

RE: Starting car in Park???
If you push up on the shifter when you turn the key will it start then? It may be that the linkage is out of adjustment just enough where it's not completely in "park." Is the button on the top of the shifter completely "out" when you put the car in "park?" (I did think that the "neutral safety switch" keeps you from being able to start the car in "drive." But I may be wrong.) I have seen the problem that I'm explaining in the past keep a person from starting the car in "park." Try pushing up on the shifter and turning the key. Good luck and let us know what the outcome is.
