Default Swap manual transmission to automatic transmission

Yes, That’s correct. I want to convert my 75 four speed to an automatic.

Has anyone ever done so? Please let me know what’s necessary.

I’d appreciate any thoughts from the guys who swapped automatics for manuals.

I suspect this’ll be easier.

Thanks
MarkV

If you were closer I would help you! I am planning on pulling the automatic out of my '73 and putting in a 4 speed. Other than a shift assembly and cover plate you will need a flex plate, and a cooler. I am not sure if you will have to change the driveshaft. The biggest pain will be removing the clutch pedal.

Not sure why but the automatics had a removable cross-member. Might be to facilitate removal. If so, you might have to pull the engine to get the auto tranny in or modify the cross-member to make it removable. I think the driveshaft is a different length also. I also think the auto trannys had the heavy duty half-shafts but that may be due to the higher torque output in the earlier C3 model years. I doubt the '75 original small block would present a problem.

Edit: Don't know if the '75s had any electronics that need to be hooked up. Something to check.

Thanks for your reply.
Yes the automatic cross member bolts in/out. Making installation easier. I’ve pulled a Muncie 4 out of a 74. Didn’t need to pull the motor but it wasn’t fun. Had to strip everything off the transmission before it would come out.

I’m waiting for warmer weather.

For what it’s worth I swapped out my TH350 for a 200 R4 trans. I did a lot of research on everything from gearing ( 3.55 rear end gears ) to claims of “bolt in applications “. Granted your going’s from manual to automatic, you still should look at all your options 200r4 vs 700 4R. My choice of the 200r4 was truly a “ bolt in “ job. I was able to use the original drive shaft without having to make any modifications and just 1 small modification to the crossmember was needed. Yes I know you’re going from manual to automatic so these things will probably have to be changed so the big factor is the rearend gears you have and gears in the new transmission. A lot of information is out there on this subject so do your research and you won’t regret your decision.

I have the same project ahead of me on a 1972.

Anything to look out for?
