Default Would appreciate any suggestions.

Hey all I own a 1976 stingray, yesterday when I was driving on the interstate I threw my rods, piston rings, head gasket everything is completely trashed the engine just ripped itself apart. Mainly looking on some ideas on what I should put back in there was thinking about getting a 383 put in there. The engine that was in there was a 350. Since I am replacing the engine figured I would just go all out so am getting a blower for it also, what else can I put into it that will make it faster? Cool air intake? Anyone know a good place to get a high performance 350 or 383? Preferably near kansas?

well if your gonna run a blower a low compression 350 would be better than a 383
i dont think it will be a fun drivable car with a blower on it!!
you might want to just get a good 383 built and go threw the trans while your at it or it will blow apart next!!

Gotta go w/blknblu on this one. First:decide what you want the car to be-daily driver, weekend cruiser-all out racer, drag or road and so on. After that pick up the crate motor that best fits your plan and accessorize it to do what you want. You can go to a race shop with a couple of bushel baskets full of Bens and pick it up when they're done.
In your shoes I'd pick up a crate 350 rated around 350 horses, build the tranny(Bowtie Overdrives will build you a killer 2004R for a couple grand) and enjoy driving my classic vet!
I built a 383 with all the good stuff,balanced,6 inch rods, good heads etc, frankly it ain't that much more than the 350 that came out! Good Luck!

what ever you decide to build just remember the best money you can spend is on the cam and heads its what makes 80 % of your engines power!!!

Default Thanks

Thanks for responding back with good advice. I think I am going to be going with the 350 with 350 horsepower thats sounds great. I don't know much about cars but bought this corvette a year ago in the middle of one of my deployments, my parents picked it up so I didn't get a good chance to look at it but I guess the guy who had it before me didn't take very good care of the engine. How much would a 350 with 350 horsepower cost? I looked online and most of them said 6k which is alot of money lol, they were also brand new engines. Can I get a remanufactured somewhere or how about a used, I think buying a used would just be opening me up for more problems down the road. Where are places that I should go to ask about ordering an engine and having it installed? I thought about the blower and supercharger some more haha and this is my daily driver so that probably wouldn't be the best idea. For a cam I want stop and go acceleration to be the best like at a red light or something so I would need a smaller cam for that right? Bigger cams are for highway acceleration? Like I said I know nothing about cars but would love to learn about my vette is there any good books or websites that tell everything you need to know about 350 engines? Cams, headgaskets all that stuff?

For books there are literally hundreds! My favorites are: Power Secrets by Smokey Yunick. How to Hotrod smallblock Chevys by Petersen Publications And I believe the other is titled The Smallbock Chevrolet,I don't remember the publisher.
I did a quick check in Summit and found a 330 hp 350 for $4115 and change,$6000 sounds a little high.
You might want to look around locally and see if there isn't a rebuilder who will install their motor, that might be your best bang for the buck. If YOU buy the motor and pay someone to install it if there's a problem they'll say it was the motor and the motor people will say it was the installer! No warranty I've ever heard of will pay for the labor!
At your level of experience and knowledge the best thing you can do is find someone you can trust, check the local parts stores ask around check with the Chamber of Commerce,a lot of research now might save you a lot of headaches and heartaches in the future!
Some of the BEST mechanics are part-time,spare time guys who work at home on weekends etc.,also some of the VERY WORST! Ask the mechanic you're checking out for references, check the references! Best of Luck!

Default Nice

Nice thanks alot, I looked up race shops in my area like you said on your other post partsman41 and found one that would fit my needs. They said they could build me a 350 for around 2300 dollars, they said it would be more if I wanted to do things to it that would make it faster. I'm going to talk to them in person this saturday and explain to them what I need exactly, also to get some references like you said from them. I happen to have a mechanic skills shop here on post who has mechanics walking around helping you if you need it. Also have a friend who has takin out and put in motors so going to take the engine out this weekend to. Going to put it in my barracks room and mess around with it haha, sounds like fun.

350 with 350 hp isnt that much of a strech now days!! i have a 350 .030 bored over
(355) making close to 500 hp with monster heads and cam and a 4 barrel 750 holley!!
any decsent machine shop can build a 350 hp 350 and should warranty it for 2000-3000!!
my 355 was built in the late 90`s and still runs like the day i started it and i paid 4000 then for it and they gave me a 3yr warranty!!
