Great plan! You can read books forever and if you don't actually get your hands dirty, there will be a lot you miss! A lot of my early learning was done in a Navy base auto hobby shop with any number of guys stopping by to give a hand or a little advice or just to BS. When you're done the car will be part of you and a great source of pride and a feeling of accomplishment. There is absolutely no other car that will do this like a vette! Take it easy, take your time and understand what you're doing as you go! Good Luck!

Do yourself a favor and buy a new 350 crate engine from Summit or Jegs.
I put a 385 hp fast burn crate engine in 5 years ago and have had very good results.
You can pump these up even more if you like by adding a nasty cam etc.
If you want something that is fast and you can drive on the street this is the way to go.
