The '70 LS-5 was rated at 390 horsepower which dropped to 365 in '71 due to the implementation of no-lead gasoline and the subsequent compression ratio reduction.
Based on those numbers, my L48 wasn't all that far off in HP from the L82 since his was a '76, but still, it doesn't seem like I should have been able to beat him so badly. (Not that it was a bad feeling though!! LOL!) But I'd still like to understand the "how and why" of it happening. Three car lengths was a lot......you had to be there.

Assuming that both engines are factory stock and tuned to factory specs, the other two variables that could affect the outcome of your race would be the transmission and rear end ratios.

Were you ahead of him in the entire race from beginning to end?

Great question! As a matter of fact we started off neck to neck for about the first 50 feet, then I shot ahead and stayed ahead the whole way! Now that I think about it, it probably all changed when the car shifted out of first. That's when it seemed to leep ahead. I didn't manually shift the auto trans, I just floored it and off we went. I don't know if the other guy did the same thing.

There could be other small factors there to like his throttle is not going total WOT,or maybe he does not have enough total timing, or his transmission is set to shifts at a different RPM than yours. Every car has a sweet spot and it can take a while to find it sometimes, and it sounds like yours is there.

Maybe! My car does seem to run just as it should! Nice, smooth idle, no hesitation under throttle, stays at a nice even temp even in this blazing hot weather we're having, shifts as solid as good be.....guess I should be happy it's just a couple small things I need to do, like a door window and the A/C, and THESE DAMN BUMPER COVERS! (See my latest thread about today's "Welcome Home!" greeting the C3 gave me when I pulled into my driveway!
