Default "85 clutch question

my 1985 needs clutch linkage adjustment, i noticed at the gas station i got out and she started to roll a bit. she was in 1st gear, turned off and on a sloping angle. sometimes i'll press the clutch to start the car and nothing but i'll hold the key over, release the clutch and press it down further and it'll turn over. in reverse she hardly want to move and i'm sure it's the clutch linkage adjustment. any info on how to adjust the linkage would be appreciated, thanx in advance

1st of all, I think your clutch is hydraulic. If so, there is no adjustment. You need to check the clutch master cylinder reservoir for fluid level. The starting problem is in your clutch neutral switch. The switch might be getting bad and by pumping it it might make it work. Does your clutch slip any on shifts? How about cruising at say 45 mph in high gear and get on the throttle without stepping on the clutch. Does the engine rev up a little?

THE RESEVOIR IS AT THE RIGHT LEVEL, IT DOESN'T SLIP AT ALL AND NO RREVVING GOING ON,. IT'S JUST THOSE ISSUES I EXPLAINED 1. SOMETIMES ON AN INCLINE IT'LL BEGIN TO ROLL WHEN IN ANY GEAR WITH THE CAR TURNED OFF. 2. REVERSE DOESN'T WORK AS WELL AS 1ST GEAR AT START OUT AND SOMETIMES WON'T TURN OVER WITHOUT REPRESSING THE CLUTCH DOWN FURTHER

I dont think there is a need to yell at mech as he is just trying to help. How new is your clutch? Any leaks? Fluid been changed recently? Shifts normal correct? Any strange noises or anything else unusual that you havent mentioned? Its hard to diagnos as we are not there. Hmm have you installed a racing clutch or a short throw shifter shift light anything that would have something to do with the tranny???

Sounds like an operator description error to start. Your Vette needs to be in reverse gear to properly park and remove the Key. If you are in reverse and you car still rolls, I'd suspect your having more trouble than just parking on hills.

Your vehicle is equiped with a Doug Nash Super T-10 4 speed manual transmission with a special overdrive transmission (4+3).

The Clutch uses a hydrolic master/slave setup. It is possible for the slave cylinder to be partly stuck causing the clutch/pressure plate to not make full pressure contact, but I've never seen it.

It might be possible that the overdrive portion of the transmission is slipping. Does the Overdrive work correctly in 2nd 3rd and 4th?

My best guess is the clutch is old and driven hard, and there is nothing left of the clutch.

PS: I looking for a 4+3 for my 86. Let me know if you have one ($600 or so)

Chris

There are a few issues here that have to be sorted out and isolated individually as Mech259 and 86 Ironhead have pointed out. Regarding the clutch - if there is any slippage while driving or accelerating, then this may indicate that the clutch disc is worn / high milage. How many miles does your vehicle have? Typically, if you press the clutch pedal in and it is difficult to put the vehicle into gear, then this would indicate that the pressure plate is worn out. (assuming the fluid level is adequate since you have a hydralic clutch)

THE FLUID LEVEL IS CORRECT, THERE IS NO SLIPPAGE IN ANY GEAR, IT GOES INTO GEAR WELL WHEN SHIFTING, OVERDRIVE WORKS FINE AND THESE ARE THE REASONS I DON'T UNDERSTAND MY PROBLEMS. JUST THAT IT #1 DOES'NT WANT TO GO IN REVERSE WELL AND THAT'S WHY I THOUGHT MAYBE THERE MAYBE SOME REVERSE LINKAGE ISSUE

Here is a link to a site that has a parts breakdown of your Super T10, although it does not include the overdrive, which was only available on the corvette. It is in .pdf file format, so you can save it to your computer for future reference.

http://www.richmondgear.com/01pdfs/pages36-38.pdf

As you will notice, there is a seperate shaft holding the gear assembly for reverse. This might be a point of failure your describing.

Hope this helps you and others understand the 4+3 a little beter

It is your clutch safety switch...bypass it with a jumper
