I have an 86 with a brake issue. Not all the time but alotof the time when i apply the brakes at in-town speeds to come to a stop my brakes seem to grind and slip. They make a very disturbing noise like metal grinding on metal. I took it in to les schwab and they said my breaks and rotors were fine. Anyone know what my problem is?

 

Man that sure doesn't sound like they are fine. Especially the grinding sound. Could dmg your rotors
and that is $$$$$$. You could have a build up of brake dust. Is there dark residue mounting up inside
your wheels?

I recently had the squeeking problem. Had ceramic pads installed on front. Problem cured. Good luck.

Well i took it down to the wishy washy and pressure washed the inside of the wheels. It seems to work allittle better. cause there is alot of tough road grime covering everything. i'll try blasting it again and see if that cures the problem. would buying some disc break cleaner be a good idea?

 

I had considered that as a temporary fix but on most of the cleaners you have to take the wheels
off and I don't have the facilities at home for that. There may be a spray with wheels on but it's
usually too windy here in Paducah for that and I don't want to clean up a mess on my garage floor.
The "wishy-washy" spray may be the best temp. fix but if you need pads I definitely reccommend
ceramic.

@Mr. Aaron: You may want to remove the wheels and check to see if any pebbles or debris has gotten stuck in the brake pad itself. It's worth checking.....

I will be taking off the wheels this monday. I've done it before when i rotated my own tires. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Thanks for the replies!
