on a 1993 -would a bad or failing coil throw a code 36 - car just stumbles like the key was turned on and off then the check engine lite comes on if i turn the car offat this point and try to start it -it does start -butit takes a little longer (for now )...the check engine lite may or may not clear ....very strange ..any comments or direction would be great .....

 

Vito Check the coil wire that goes into the opti-spark. Look at the area on the boot. I had that wire go bad [split boot] and it gave me fits to try and find it. It was shorting through the boot on to the back of the water pump! Take the wire off and check it carefully. I had to twist the boot to find the split.

 

good point about the split coil wire - but that was checked early on ...still stumped !!!
