A cold start injector is an extra injector that acts in the same way as the choke on a carburator. It squirts extra gas into the intake system to richen the mixture for cold starts until the engine warms enough to run leaner. It then stops injecting until the next time it is needed. A Volkwagen Rabbit I used to have had one that quit working properly so I had to hot wire it to a toggle to make it start/stop.
