Curious usual tire width ..215-225?

Welcome to the forum. I believe the '84 stock tire width was 255/50-16. By '96 they were Front: 255/45-17 Rear: 17" 285/40-17. Not sure why you would want to go narrower. For one thing it would look weird.

If you drive the north west in the winter, that I did for many winters in a c-3. You can use all seasons radials or all season radials with studs mounted on their own set of rims, lots of options. I ran BF Goodrich all season radials wider than recommended, the bad thing about that they follow the groves in the road, older roads are the worst, I would not recommend. I have used Les Schwab for many years highly recommended, answer any tire question you may have.
