Can anyone tell me how to disable the "4 to 1"[8D] feature on my C4 manual six-speed tranny. The guy I purchased it from pulled the fuse on it but that circuit also controls the back-up lights which are disabled too.

Any ideas?

There are a couple of wires I'm not sure where they are but I imagine they go to the transmission. If you unplug them the 1-4 is disabled. Corvette catalogues (Eckler's, Corvette Central, etc) sell inserts that you can plug into the connection which disconnect the wires but keep the seal intact so no dirt, mouisture can get in there. More than likely someone at the Chevy dealer knows where the wires are. Mine was already done when I got it so that's why I don't know quite where they are.

 

You'll have to get under the car. On the driver's side of the transmission you will see a cylindrical component with some wires coming out to a connection. As uleg suggested you can buy a filler for the connector or just tape them off to keep dirt out ,etc.

 

Educate me - what is it you are disabling? What is '4 to 1' anyway?

So the '4 to 1' being referred to here is the Doug Nash 4+3 Transmission then? I have that in my '86 and would love to be able to disable the automatic feature only - that is, I'd love it if it only kicked in when I wanted it to. Is that possible?

The only one I'm familiar with is the ZF6.

The ZF6- speed has a computer controlled lock out which forces you to go from 1st to 4th. This was CAFE..a gas saving feature.

By disconnecting the electrics at the tranny solenoid this feature is disabled & you again have control of all 6 speeds.

 

Just as a note, if you just disconnect the 1 o 4 function the ECM will see an open circuit and set a trouble code to warn of the solenoid failure. The part to Disable is under 20 bucks and really easy to install.[8D]
