Hi all,

Recently my 1990 coupe fuel level indicator stopped working. Even though my tank is full the gauge reads only 1/8 full or "Reserve". I have'nt taken anything apart yet but, I will when a new tank gasket I ordered arrives. I know that the fuel sensor is part of the fuel pump assy. in the tank and that it does not seem to be a seperate part. Is there a common problem with this sensor I should look for, and can the sensor be repaired or replaced with out buying a $300 fuel assy.?

Got a multimeter? Check the FSM for the wiring schematic. There's probably a local ground right near the tank, and 2 other leads to and from the tank back up front. One for supply voltage (constant), and the other return, which is probably a variable current, depending on the read of the gauge.

 

Where did you order your fuel tank gasket from? I assume you are talking about the gasket between the tank and the fuel pump assembly flange (with the filler nozzle). Everywhere I went said they couldn't even order one.

Yes, the gasket I ordered is for the filler neck. I ordered the gasket from Corvette Central, #364450--$6.95. I think they said it was back ordered but, it would be there in 1 week.

 

I got a new sender from Ecklers for my 86 a couple of years ago.

 

I found a test for this gauge problem in the shop service manual. It says to put a test light from terminal B in the tank harness connector to ground, if it lights, the CCM (central control module)is bad. To me this dose not make sence because the B terminal is the hot terminal and of course it will light a lamp when grounded. I'm going to check the wiring at the CCM this week end for possible problems. I also have been checking parts sources and found, to my suprise, that no one seems to carry or rebuild CCMs any more.

Yes, I heard from someone at Corvettes of Houston about a year ago that they could not get CCMs any longer. Apparently the technology behind them is so out of date that it's impossible to get the chips to produce them any longer - just like any older-generation computer.

 

Further to the CCM problem, I found a post on another forum that claimed that A1 Cardone - http://www.cardone.com/English/Club/...ts/default.asp will rebuild CCMs and ECMs for older 'Vettes. The post claimed that these guys do the rebuilds for AC Delco.

Speaking from extensive experience, A-1 really turns out some crap. At my shop I try NOT to buy anything that A-1 Cardone puts out.
