Default L98 Problem

Hi ya'll, I hope someone can help me,, and I havent found an answer in past posts, I have a '86 L98, one it runs hot, hopefully I can figure that out on my own. The other problem is when I run it in the garage, the fuel fumes are so bad you cant stand it, it just smells like its running really rich. One guy told me that a clogged cat would dmake it smell like that, today I diconnected my exhaust from the headers, and it still smells bad. Idle is fine, rev's are fine, no SES light, it just stinks to high heaven..pls. help

Is it black smoking? Check your fuel pressure, also check fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose for fuel in it, that will make it run rich. No fuel leaks on intake or fuel system? Those are things to check first. [8D]

Wow thanks for the quick reply,,,,theres no smoke what so ever, no fuel leaks anywhere that I can see. Where is the fuel pressure regulator at? Sorry I'm used to an engine that if it had compression, fuel, and spark, it ran.

Are there any mods on the car? if so what are they; that would also help in determining a problem. If its stock check the spark plugs to see if they are fouling, from there I would check fuel pressure, then for vaccume leaks, last but not least I would check cap rotor plug wires. Also check you o2 censor they might be slightly fouled causing a rich condition without throwing a code or CEL.

Fuel pressure regulator is on the fuel rail on the passenger side of the engine. It is about 2" in diameter and has a vacuum hose attached to it. [8D]
