I think that D93 is probably onto something with the compression. Your car is an 88 with God knows how many miles on it? My assumption would be over 100k. My car almost has 100k on it and my car lost a lot of compression. If the compression is the problem, you can get someone to build the bottom end of your motor. They would just bore it out to clean up the cylinder walls and then get new pistons and i believe pushrods also. The whole compression thing comes from people abusing the crap out of their cars. With Corvettes, people buy them and think that just because it is a Corvette, it can take the abuse. They dont understand that an engine is an engine. It still needs the typical maintenence and stuff like that to keep up with it and unless it is built for racing, you cant really push it to its limits as often as you would like. That is when you start having big problems with a used Corvette.
