I have BF Goodrich on my 92 and they ride fine. Part of the rough ride you are experiencing cannot be cured - it is a characteristic of those "mid model" C4s. My ride is worse that what I had in my pickup! But we still got Vettes!

I put Yokohama's on my '87. Z-rated. Very expensive but well worth it in my opinion. Grips the pavement like glue. Quick starts, smooth ride, EXCELLENT cornering. They look really cool too

I have had sooooo many different tires on my cars, so far the ones I have liked the best are the nitto 555 extreme's, I also had the falken grb's that I likes alot but for cali driving I go with nitto's. If you want something a little more agressive (IE. stickier) the drag radials are pretty nice, however for the vette I like the BFG kdw II's, and the regular kdw's great tires. The kdw II's are pretty loud under normal driving, but the grip well in rain and dry.

I recently bought a set of Firestone FireHawk Wide Oval tires for my 89 convertable and I really like them, my ride has improved 50%. A good source for looking up tires and their weak and strong points is "tirerack.com" They have a lot of information on making tire choices!
