Default Need Help with Rear Defroster

I have a 87 C4 and have recently used my rear window defrost/defog but when I do after about a minute the car starts to smell like I am burning insulation and uphlostry inside the car. I have not changed anything around in the back as far as carpet and floor mats. the wires on the back window are not getting hot and te defroster is working but I cannot drive with it on as the smell is terrible. what could it be? I am not sure where to even look for the problem.

thanks for the help and information.

hmmm...is there any smoke, or a better indication of where abouts this smell is coming from?

There is no Smoke and it is hard to tell exactly where the smell is coming from other than from the back glass area. I may try to turn on the defroster with the window open to see if it still does it.

how is your weather stripping? maybe water got in somewere and finally got to something electrical. I would check it out, you do not want a car fire or anything.

the weatherstriping is in great shape, it started one night about a week ago and it has not stopped. the question is what could have the water got into? I dont seem to see any signs of water entry anywhere. I know what you mean about a car fire, I've had this vette for about a month and I dont want anything to happen to it.

I think I found the problem this morning, it seems that something that I put in the back of the car (ie. the targa top) bumped the wire connection to the rear defroster on the right hand side, causing the wires to move and start to melt the plastic connector. I now need to find a new connector and see if that was the problem. the connection was very warm this morning with the defroster on, so I am assuming that this is the problem area.
