I have an '89 with 82k miles and the service engine soon light just came on. I know in many cases this is just a cruel joke enforced by the EPA. Can anyone give me some advice on how to reset it, or whether you think I should take it to the shop?

try disconecting the neg batt cable for about 1 min that should clear codes if it comes back on then you should get it checked thanks johnny

 

Stick a piece of black electricians tape over it.

 

It's not a joke, LOL, there is a sensor reporting voltage out of expected range and you can pull codes to find out wht's going on.
