Default Spare Tire Carrier - 91

You all probably know this already, but since I gather a lot of info from this site, I thought I'd pass along an experience that might help someone else...

I recently had a flat in my 91, and it's my first Vette. The owner's manual is not really good at explaining getting the spare tire and jack out of the carrier, and this may have been the first time anyone has ever lowered the thang in my car.

After loosening the bolt, I struggled and pulled and pushed that sucker for a while, even unscrewed the bolt all the way, and it still wouldn't come out. Finally, it came down, and I was in business.

Well, after I got a new rear tire ($187 later, thank you) I thought putting the carrier back together would be a problem. After a short time I realized that if I took of the license plate it would be much easier. Duh! Of course! I had much more access to the bolt assembly, etc., and it was a snap.

So for those of you who ever get stuck changing your first spare (I think 91 was the last year they assembled the carriers that way), you might want to consider taking off the license plate. I hope this helps someone!

Happy Driving!
Mike

Hey Mike,

Thanks a bunch. I hope I never need to use this info on MY 91 but thanks all the same.

Enjoy that car Bud,

Jim
