Default Stock tire size not available ?

Need new tires, 255/50-16, not readily available and am considering larger rims. Would like to keep original look. Any suggestions ?

A quick Google search turned up multiple sources for OEM tire size.

Almost all show “on back order”. I have called the local tire suppliers and have been told that 255/50-16 are not available. I have called and talked to national online tire dealers with pretty much the same results. I’m waiting for a return call from Coker tire, have been given a price and he is “pretty “ sure he has access to 4 ! I’m looking for info from anyone that has moved up to 17” or 18” rims as those sizes are more readily available. I really would like to not have to do this but maybe my only option. If so I would like to use a stock looking rim. Don’t know if that is an option.

if you're willing to go a little smaller, check out 245x50/16 tires you likely can find some but your speedometer will run a little fast. When I replaced mine the other year I wanted something closer to the original size. I looked at a lot of different brands and sizes and to me it appeared that there were more 18" than 17" with 19's and bigger more likely to be available in the future IMO. I found I could get some 9.5"x18" 40 backspace rims that are almost identical to the 9.5"x16" 38 backspace rims on the car. Now I checked sizes and found that 255x40/18" tires were virtually identical in diameter to the originals so that's what I did. I happen to like BFG's and bought a set of G-Force tires and that's what I put on my 86. They fix virtually exactly as the originals did and ride nice and with no interference what-so-ever.
Hope that helps.

Thanks for your reply, I have installed a set of 245/50-16. I really wanted to keep the stock wheels and did not want to spend an outrageous amount for rims that would fit the bill. Thanks again, Pat.

I am in this same situation. I love my salad shooters but I specifically want all season tires. All 255/50-16's are track/performance. I am considering the 245's but am concerned about loosing width, especially since I have 9.5's on the front and back (convertible). Would you mind sharing a picture of your car with the 245's installed? Would you also let us know if you have 8.5's or 9.5's? Thanks in advance.
