Default Thermostat question

In order for the 160 degree thermostat to work with your car do you have to purchase the thermomaster chip from hypertech for it also? I have an 89 vette 6 speed, was going to get a cooler thermostat for it cause the stock one is just to hot for comfort in my opinion.

Basically the cooler thermostat is needed to make the chip work, not the other way 'round. The cooler thermostat might actually cost you power and economy due to,among other things, the oil being thicker and the fuel not burning as efficiently. Keep close tabs on things and see if it helps or not?

Default RE: Thermostat question

First of all, I have the Thermomaster chip and 160 degree Powerstat. The Thermomaster chip is junk. Don't waste your money. It only affects operations at WOT and then and only then.Matter of fact, I believe my LT1 runs better without it. Second, if you put in a 160 degree stat you must realize that your car isn't going to run cooler. All that will happen is your car will taker longer to warm up and once the thermostat reaches 160 degrees it will remain open - constantly. You are probably not going to see any temps below 160 degrees after warm up therefore the stat will be open all the time - never closing. The reason you use a 160 degree stat with the Thermomaster is because Hypertech reccomends it because the chip MAY cause your fans to run continously without it.
