Thermostat Replacement

Thermostat Replacement
I replaced the thermostat on my C4 but now the engine idles roughly, runs rough and pops the exhaust at low speed. All electrical connectors were reconnected. The only thing I didn't do was install the rubber seal around the thermostat as called for in the Haynes repair manual. There wasn't one there when I took off the original. Any ideas? Damn, I was planning a long cruise today!
Thanks,
Ruben

RE: Thermostat Replacement
Right behind the housing is a Vacume line tree and several others in front. Mine did the same thing when I replased my Tstat. I missed a couple of vacume lines. They are hard to get to and if old they can crack easely. check them out and hopefully that is your problem. I really don't see anything else that could arise from changing the Tstat. Cheers.

RE: Thermostat Replacement
Yeah. I thnk that's what it is. I'm afraid coolant got in there as I didn't drain it down as instructed in the shop manual (which of course Ii read after Ii did the job). I'm thinking about flushing the distributor housing with fresh water to see if i can get coolant residue out of the distrubuter and then hitting it with compressed air and letting it dry out. Last option before pulling the distrubutor off and cleanig/drying it.Do you know ifthe MSD Pro-Billet distrubutors arewater proof?
Thanks for your help,
