Good point.

This recommendation came from Stewart, the folks that produce the hi-flow water pump. They recommend the thermostat in addition tothe pump - here is a copy from Jack Wilson of Stewart:
1.Yes. it is a "commom myth" that that coolant can pass through the
radiator to fast. 2. yes you should have the hi-flow Robert/Shaw
t-stat. with the holes drilled for by-passing and 3. yes, I would
definetly put the Stewart hi-flow water pump back on.

 

WetterWater - a coolantaddative by Redline will drop your water and oil temps by ~15 and 10F respectively. It's about $10 a bottle (20oz) at most auto parts stores. This does alter the freezing temp of your coolant, so read the bottle instructions and if you've added a significant amount of this stuff to your system, it could freeze in the winter and ruin your coolant work.

My 85 with larger cams dropped 15F on coolant and almost 10F on oil temps. I'm in the SE Michigan area quite regularly, where is this drive?
I can keep about 200 on oil and 230's on water pretty consistently.

I have an '87 conv'twith the bottom end, only,Lingenfeltered. When I acquired this vehicle out of Texas in 1994, it had a 192* thermostat in it and the average running temp was 220*. I replaced this thermostat right awaywith a 160* thermostat and I'm running an average198* during the hottest part of our Summers (Ontario).Like someone said, for every inquiry on this Forum, you will receive 15 -25responses. I find that MECH259 knows what he is talking about, as I'm sure there are others who are knowledgeable, as well.

another option, and this is what i did on my car... after the swap i was having big cooling issues, but after careful thought i chose to remove the fan(and shroud) and repace it with two hiflow racing twin racing fans with a built in shroud, also i put an another fan on the opposite side just in case i run over 220 it will kick on , (on track days it does a LOT of kicking on) just a thoughtbut somthing to think about do'in not a whole lot'a work for the cooling difference

 

I had previously gazed over the idea of going with a hi-performance (2) electric fan option, butthat wasin addition to the radiator - you've got me thinking.

I spoke to someone at Ron Davis racing who suggested the very same thing since the radiator seemed to work when traveling, maybe the fan wasn't doing the job.

Yes, I still have the same water pump that I had when I bought the Vette in '94. As you know, up here in Ontario, we usually drive our Vettes from the end of May to the end of September.......usually.

I does have the stock water pump on it for now, but its soon to be electric

I put a be cool radiator, lower thermostat, and programed computer to kick fans on a 180 degrees. Also added some 40 below. I run between 195 and 210 now. I live in the desert and outside temps are usually between 100 and 115 degrees. I was getting nervous when temp got to 235. Me and vette are happier now.
