Default Transmission Fluid Change

I have a 1993 LT1 Automatic with 53,000 miles on it. I just purchased this last month and it shifts fine. I checked the fluid and it appears it has never been changed. The previous owner could not recall changing it. It is not bright red but does not look burnt. What do you suggest, change it or leave it? I have heard many stories about the 700R4 in do not change the fluid and filter as the old could mix with the new fluid and cause damage or malfunction. Please if any suggestions or help I would be completely grateful. BK

Yep...I've heard the same thing, don't know how true it is though. Personally, as long as it'sshifting fine, Iwouldn't change it unless it looked burnt, or the pan gasket was leaking.

I appreciate the reply. I believe the gasket is leaking.....maybe a drop on the garage floor after a long drive. I guess in order to fix this I will have to change the filter and fluid.

Yea, you would have to change it to replace the pan gasket. But make sure the leak isn't coming from a cooling line, dipstick tube o-ring, or the frontand rear seal.

Hello,
I would change the fluid and filter and fix the leak. If the proper fluid is in the transmission (Dexron III), then adding the proper amount of transmission fluid, to top it off again, should not cause any problems. I have a '92 and had the fluid and filter changed at 95k and it seemed to have never been changed. Fluid was red / brown, but not "burnt", but should have been changed a lot sooner.

I do my vehicles' trannys at 20k intervals. TH700, and 4L60/80e's.

I can't imagine where the new fluid/old fluidmix tall tale came from...[&:]

I agree with Curious George and cwb, the more often you change any lube the longer the machine will last.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I will most definitely change the gasket, filter, and fluid. It is definitely transmission fluid that drips and is coming from around the pan. I looked at it from underneath while on a lift. BK

The old fluid tale only applies if the fluid is dark brown or black. By then it is to late anyway and fresh fluid can hasten already worn out clutch packs.
