My car is at the local HS getting worked over. This is a very very tense and nervous time in my life. I would like to go with headers for a couple of reasons, much easier than wrestling with 20 year old rusted on manifold studs, and I've always wanted the more aggresive sound of headers and perhaps I'll reap a few more horsepower.

Can someone suggest a specific model header, perhaps Hedman that will fit effortlessly? AND once the headers are put on, I will need to have a muffler shop tailor the rest of the exhaust system to fit; what can I expect to pay the muffler shop?

Ask a lot of questions about exhaust leaks at the manifold. Last set of Header I had were on a Z-28 camaro and I went through gaskets like nobodies business. I tried the standard cork, cork with metal in them, you name it. Really sounded crappy with Headers capped and exhaust leaking at manifold. Of course that was 10 + years ago. May be better now.

 

autozone has a set of header gasket that do not leak.and they dont.ihave a set on my 66 pontiac gto 396.they are around $51 a set.and they are reusable

 

mr gasket is the brand on the gaskets.hedmam are great i have4sets. but i have the collecters cut off and welded on exhaust

 

I'll try to get more specifics on mine which never have had to be re-torqued or had leaks but the key is thickness of the flange [ mine is really thick ] and quality gaskets with metal inserts.

 

Check out Melrose Headers, they are are great product. I just bought some for my 93 vette. The headers are Jet-Hot coated with all the pipes and dual cats back to the exhaust.
