Default Upgrading the foglights....Silverstars maybe...

I remember reading somewhere that you can upgrade the foglights on our C4s. I believe they are by silverstar. You also have to up the fuse a little higher though to take it....Can anyone tell me the part # and the fuse...and if its silverstar or not. The foglights I have now are useless.

From my book "101 projects for your Corvette":

Your stock bulbs are GE #880, rated at 34 watts.

Replace with GE#885, rated 50 watts. Direct replacement, no modifications needed. Will give appx 50% more light on the road.

Bulbs should be available at any auto parts store, or Walmart.

Also need to replace the Tail Lamp circuit fuse. Stock fuse is 10 amp. Replace with a 15 amp fuse. The wiring in the circuit can handle up to 20 amps, so there is not a danger with a 15 amp replacement fuse.

According to the book:

Time: 30 minutes
Cost: ~$15
Tip: Make sure you don't touch the bulb surface with your fingers.

If ya do it, I'd love to know what you think.

Aight. Thanks. I will look into that soon hopefully once everything else is worked out. 15 dollars seems cheap for better lighting. Have the fuses already here.[&:]

Update:

Went to the parts store for some car wash soap, and decided to see if they had the bulbs. They did, so I bought 'em and brought 'em home.

My Corvette is a 92, and I don't know if access to other years is the same as mine. You have to lay down on your back and crawl under the nose of the car. On the underside of the nose are 2 small doors that say "Fog light access"....Bingo![sm=exactly.gif]

Opened them up, located the wires to the twist-out sockets that contain the lamps, twisted them out and pulled them down and out thru the open hatch door so I could get a good look at them. The wires were long enuf to allow that.

Discovered that my existing bulbs had an L-shaped socket, and the new 885's have a straight socket![sm=loser.gif]

Back to the auto store to return the 885's and see if they have another bulb with 50 watt output and the L-shape required.

Sure enuf.....the 886 bulb appears to meet the needs. Bought them....6.99 each, took them home, stuck them in, closed up the access doors, changed out the fuse, checked the operation and cracked a beer.[sm=icon_cheers.gif]

Lesson learned:

Take the bulbs out of your Corvette FIRST, and take them to the auto parts store with you.

With the right bulbs in hand, it's an easy job....about 10 min.

My wife bought the same book for right after I purchased my baby. I love it![8D]

The guy has a dry sense of humor that is not apparent in any other "repair manuals".

Money well spent!!!

I made the switch in my 88 coupe and the difference in the output is very noticable. Well worth the effort. I had to also redo the ground wires if I remember correctly.
