Default C5 "1 to 4 shift"?

Hi. I own a 2003 Corvette Z06, recently bougt from a dealership. It's my second powerful car, prior to a mustang gt, but my first stick shift. When I try to shift from first to second when drivng the way I normally drive, the car automatically shifts me to 4th gear, displaying a "1 to 4 shift" in the dispay, and since this is generally around 18mph, the rpms are incredibly low and the engine vibrates. what's up with this? can I turn it off?

Not a C-5 guy,but I've read a little and that is normal for normal driving. Get in it pretty hard and it'll let you choose. Yes,I believe you can do something to the computer and turn it off.
Maybe google "skip shift" or something like that?

This is called "CAGS" for Computer-Aided Gear Shifting. It won't happen when the engine is cold or when you you shift above 2500 RPM (or some speed close to that). You can bypass it by installing a CAGS eliminator. See this link for more info:
