Default C5 starter question

Have an intermitten start problem on a stock 5.7 L 2002, with 33K miles, and diagnosed it down to new solenoid, today I pulled the starter and solenoid, The dealer wants $455, for a new one (won't sell a solenoid), I figure Autozone is around $200, and I see Ebay suff in the $70 range. My other option is to take it to a local rebuild shop and have them go throught it check it out and most likely replace the solenoid. I am leaning towards the rebuild shop. Need some expert advise before I start throwing money at it. Thank you.

It wouldn't hurt to give them a call and ask what they would charge to determine if the solenoid is, in fact, bad. Then ask what the cost might be if the solenoid is repaired or replaced. Compare that to prices for starters at rock auto and others. Know those prices before you call.

Dave01, thanks, yes I agree. There is a good local shop here and I would like to find the root cause of the problem anyway. In no real hurry now to get it back on the ground. I understood the solenoid issue is a common problem on the C5 (or so I thought) so was a little surprised others haven't chimed in. Thanks again.

As an update, I took it to the local rebuild shop, they checked out the starter and replaced the Solenoid, for $44.60. (parts and labor) When asked, they said they said they did find a problem with the Solenoid. So far it's working great.

That's great news, Scott. There's few things worse than an intermittant no-start condition.

Help! My 1998 Corvette Coupe starter went bad so the mechanic replaced the starter. It now starts and runs in park and in neutral. But as soon as you put it in gear, it stops. Any ideas?
