evaporative system leak
Have a evaporative system small leak code on my 00. I've been told they usually are caused by the gas cap. I've retightened my cap acouple of times and then reset the code to off and it will still pop back up every couple of days. Does anybody have any easy tests to determine what else it could be or any other ideas on what it could be? Thanks in advance.
Try putting a small amount of grease on the o-ring on the gas cap, if thats the site of the leak it should seal up, if not, start checking all of the rubber vacuum hoses for cracks and/or a disconnected hose.
These leaks are so common, and so impossible to fully fix, that most states (like mine, NC) that do emissions inspection via reading the OBD codes electronically rather than actual testing the car, will forgive this code. It is often the filter canisters or something, not just the filler cap. I would not worry about
Evap small leaks usually trace back to either the vent solenoid or cannister purge solenoid, or gas cap. Tightening gas gas cap usually won't fix your problem. We test these evap leaks 2 - 3 times a week on a variety of autos, but we use a smoke machine to test with, usually fairly easy to find if you have the right equipment. Shotgun approach to fixing it gets expensive. Good Luck. [8D]
