Default Fuel Gauge stopped working

Hi, I have a 98 C5 and the gas gauge and the oil pressure gauge both stopped working at the same time. I keep the car topped up with gas all the time so it's always full. My question is, if I keep getting the error messages (low fuel, low oil pressure)will the ECU shut the engine down eventually?

I would say - no. As far as I know, this happens only if the column lock malfunctions and the steering wheel remains locked. It looks like you will eventually need to replace the oil pressure and fuel sender units.

I have an 02 and my oil pressure stopped working a few months ago ( pegged out on max psi ) and From time to time my gas gauge will stop working also. Someone told me to start using shell gas if possible since they have cleaning agents in thier gasoline. I also use a fuel system cleaner every time I change my oil to help keep the system clean. It worked for my gas gauge but I need to change the oil sender unit.

If you use Techron concentrated cleaner regularly, you shouldn't have to be choosy with the brand of gas you use. I've been using Arco, Shell, and Mobil for almost 8 years and I have never had a problem with my fuel sender. I DO throw a large bottle (or 2 small bottles) of Techron in my tank every 6 months or so.

same problem is hapennign with my 98 c5. both gas and oil. its just a common problem with c5s... you just have to change both sending units. the oil one at the dealership is around 300 including the part.

Thanks Raulck_hn17, I was afraid someone would say that about the oil gauge.

The oil pressure sending unit can be had for like 46 bucks at advanced auto and is a snap to replace. 300 bucks is crazy to pay for that! I can list the steps if it would help vettemanrob in changing that thing.

I had one last month that I changed the sensor, still pegged the oil pressure. Everyone said these sensors can be bought bad... so I bought one from GM, very pricey. Put that one in, still pegged. So I got my voltmeter out and started testing... come to find out there is a ground wire that goes from the PCM in the passenger fender up to the sending unit, this one rubbed in two on the back of the drivers side head. I soldered that wire back together and BAM works great!
