Default Steering Lock Column

Hello posters;

Questions. I have a 2003 manual trannie Vet. I am getting a note on my DIC. It says Service Column Lock. Now I know that there has been a recall on this (thanks to all my friends here on the forum) So I called the dealer and they said that they did the recall on it, the month that I bought it from them (Aug 2006) Now they want to charge me for fixing it. Does this sound right? Any help would be great! Thanks!

Sherry

Sherry,

I'm not 100% sure on this but, I think on the 6 speeds they just reprogrammed the computer to shut off the fuel if the column lock does not disengage when the engine is started. This keeps you from driving if it fails but does nothing to actually fix the defect. It's a cheap solution to the problem. You probably are now seeing the actual defect.

I have a 02 vette 6 speed and my column lock on me a lunch time. Called dealer and they towed it and fixed it under warranty. From what I read on there copy of the warranty ticket it said that they replaced a switch in the column. My copy did not say that but it paid .8 to do the job so it must have involved a little bit of work. As far as getting them to warrany it again you might want to call the 800# like 2k2 said and see if you get anything that way.

You need to be sure that the locking mechanism is comepletely removed or disables so that it cannot lock the steering column under ANY conditions. Two weeks after the dealership did the recall to my C5, my column locked up solid and I had to have the car flat-bedded to the dealership. Shortly after that, I installed a column lock bypass.

I also installed the column lock bypass....really easy to do, too. Didn't want to mess with the dealer and have it come back to haunt me later!
