Default Automatic sport mode

I have the automatic w/paddle shift that has to be in "S"to use the paddles for paddle shifting. I am just getting to read the manual and if I understand correctly, the transmission will still shift itself in "S" mode at different shift points than if it is in "D".Before I leave it in "S" and wind it to the rev limiter without it shifting, does anyone know if in fact the transmission does shift itself in "S" mode?

You can put it in "S" and drive it to the limit and it will shift automatically. If you have the “3LT” package I would recommend you set the HUD to Track Mode 1 or 2 and it will display among other things what gear you are in and the rpm’s. With the paddles, on up shifts you cannot hurt the drive train. The rev limiter will let you know you need to up shift. On down shifts you will get an “X” and it will not down shift. Once you get the hang of it you can just tell by the sounds from the engine. You can’t hurt it unless you try and it makes for very spirited driving at your finger tips so to speak.[sm=grin.gif]

Im going to say that Im sure that it will shift in "S" mode because it wouldnt let itself redline and cause harm to the engine. Im know in the bmws that Ive owned in the past, the steptronic mode will carry you all the way to redline and shift about 100 rpm under just before redline is hit. I doubt GM would allow you to blow up your automatics engine. I know that in porsche's tiptronic cars it will shift for you when you get just under redline....just like bmw.....lexus also does this in the is300s. My question to you is that if youre racing it, can you not just flick the paddle when you approach redline? That seems to be the smartest move. In all of my manual cars, even when Im agressively driving them, Ill shift about 2 or 300 before redline just to be safe. All you gotta do is get out and try it though. One rev limiter slap wont hurt it...just dont hold it there.

I would flick the paddle myself if I saw it approaching redline. The owners manual was not clear at what rpm the shift would occur. I interpreted it to be a higher shift point in "S"; however, I was not expecting it to go near redline. I am a little surprised to hear that. This is my first venture to an auto and I would not have chosen it if it did not have the paddles. I think in time I will grow to like it.

How does the shift response feel in the vette? The only paddle shift that Ive actually felt and liked was in the f430. I hear audi has a new paddle shift transmission that is a sequential 6 (or 7 I cant remember) speed that is supposed to shift just asfast if not faster than the ferrari. Is the 6 speed paddle shift just another slush box or is it a sequential setup like the F1 cars the ferrari and audi got their transmissions from? I ordered the manual because I was affraid of the auto w/paddle because I absolutely love the feel of the manual and an automatic car cant anticipate a turn....I dont think....I do know the ferrari does a great job of it though. Could someone please shed some light on this new automatic?

I have found out a little more about the transmission. If you put it in "S" mode and do not use the paddles, it shifts like a normal auto until you get into it a little. It seems like it will make an extra downshift in this mode and will wind a little tighter before shifting. It must have a different program in the "S" mode for faster driving.
