2 problems
Hello All,
(I have an '85 coupe)
First problem:
When turning the steering wheel, I hear a whirring (?) sound. When I straighten it out, the noise goes away. Does this mean my power steering is going out?
Second problem:
To shift into reverse from park, I have to put it in neutral then put it in reverse. I don't think it's the transmission (as least I hope not). It runs great once I'm in reverse. I'm hoping it is just a linkage problem that I can adjust with the transmission cable. I'm not sure if that is the exact name, but I think I'm close. I was looking through the repair manual and I think that's what they said could be done. Does anyone have any experience with this?
Any and all help is appreciated.

Anyone from Utah know a good place to get a decent paint job?

Hi Michelle, First probem- Sorry but it sounds very much like your pump is on its way out. But I would think you could get one fairly reasonable off ebay,
Second problem- I think your right about linkage, sounds like a small adjustment or perhaps a worn or loose connection. If you have access to a hoist or pit I'd check on the tranny first. Easier than pulling the whole consol apart. Disconnect the cable and see it you can pull and or push in or out on the cable. That'll tell you if there is ware anyplace. And click your tranny through the gears by hand on the side of the tranny itself. It should be obvious of the positions.
I could be wrong on either one. I'm pretty sure on the pump. Hard to say for sure with out hearing it. Good luck and keep us posted
