I've been told that running with the air cleaner open (top off) can cause a serious risk of fire? Something about causing backfires or if a backfire were to occur?

Well if it works for you fine but:
a) it's hard to understand why it would work better than stock, much less a good cold air induction system none of which produce a terribly obvious seat of the pants power increase without tuning, etc.
b) I would love to see a before and after dyno result to confirm the result to see where and why the power change is produced and what this "mod" does to A/F ratio

K&N and a cutlid= ten horsepower from "supposed" dyno results. You can check out some other forums and type it in the search forum...Digital corvettes or something....It will show up some results. I have read it before. Fire? I dont think so. If hes talking about the air cleaner lid, no risk of fire.....It is opening up and showing the full surface area of the filter....I would think that the fire would start from leaves being stuck in the STOCK one that is not cut open....Which I highly.....highly doubt....
