Question Engine bay lighting C4

Hi all .. Newbie .. On my C4 convertible the electrical wiring for the 2 under hood lights has been cut .. can anyone inform me how the 2 under hood lights operate? IE a manually operated switch from inside the vehicle, or elsewhere, or maybe a pressure switch which is only active when the hood is raised?
Also, has anyone replaced them with LED's ? Appreciate any details... cheers...

They are activated by raising the hood. Yes, the incandescent blubs can be replaced with LEDs.

Thanks! Good to know about globes. When you say that the lights are activated by "raising the hood " , I was wondering how exactly are the lights activated ? Mercury bulbs? A spring loaded button switch, and if so, where is the switch located within the engine bay? Its 1996. thanks

Based on how they operate, I would say there is a mercury switch contained in each housing. You can change the bulbs to LEDs without worrying about the switch. Just take the glass lenses off and change out the bulbs. This is true on my 1996.
