I was just wondering if supercharges need to have oil added to them or need any special care done to them or if they are just self sustaining (spelling). This also goes with the after cooler, do I need to add water to it or anything like that?

Most Vortech units do not -- they use a feed tube from the engine oil.

Most Prochargers are self-oiling and you do need to check and change the oil every so often. The manual says to change the oil every so often, I can't remember. The oil is expensive but you need very little. There is a drain plug on the bottom and a check and fill plug on the side, not too easy to get to either in a tight engine bay.

Caveat: some Vortechs are self-oiling (but not most) and some Prochargers use engine oil through a feed line (but only a few), so you need to check: if its centrifugal and there is a feed line from the engine to the SCr then you don't need to change the SCr oil, otherwise you do.

Magnusen units have a oil fill plug on the back (as mounted on a C5) on the end facing firewall that you can check and top up, but I don't think you have to change it at regular interals and I never had mine use any oil. Again you buy the oil from Magnusen.

 

Thanks Lee, one more thing. Is there anything I need to do with the after cooler?

 

If it is water cooled (some are, some are air cooled) you need to: a) cheak the coolant hoses for leaks, b) check where they bolt to the body or any frame or structural member, etc., for corrosion - not rust, but the equivalent for alumnium, which can be caused by cathodic (different metal) interactions against the aluminum or brass fittings in the coolers, (it looks kind of like a milky white/green/brown powdery coating or blistering, etc., where two dissimilar metals contact -- alumminum & steel, copper and pot metal, etc. Other than that, they need no maintenance.

 

Thanks for all your help Lee! My supercharge does have a small metal hose leading away from it so it looks like it is not self oiling which is good I guess. I need to still check to see if the aftercooler is water cooled, I hope it's not.

 

what supercharger do you have and how do you like it?

 

I have a vortech that is aftercooled, not sure which model im to lazy to go out to the garage and pop the hood to check. I love the supercharger, sooooo much more power and it sounds really cool too. I also have headers and a few other mods done to the engine, cold air intake, exhaust etc..........
