Default 1986 coupe / New to forum

Hello all,

I've been a big chevy fan since 1978 when I bought a 1970 Camaro SS 4spd in high school (owned it for 20 years). I recently bought a 1986 coupe red/red 4spd(4+3) with Z51 and 150k miles. Final sale price was $4150.

I am pretty handy with tools and removing and replacing parts, and owning a 20 year old vette, these skills will come in handy.

My first of three projects to get this on the road are:

1) reinstall all the A.I.R. parts missing from the original owner ($216 in parts from a salvage yard) (Done) 4.5 hours of my labor

2) Tighten steering wheel ($12 for horn insulator plastic part) (Done) (5.0 hours my labor)

3) Remove 4+3 Transmission and replace 1st gear and reseal transmission and overdrive unit. (Still need to pull out tranny and find first gear/reseal kits)

The Vette is in really good shape otherwise.

If you have any leads on a 4+3 for sale ($600 or so) let me know. Remember I'm in the Phoenix area.

Chris

Welcome 86 Ironhead
sounds like a pretty good deal there, and with a little $$$, and some TLC, should be a great car for you.
send some pics when you can.

I think I got a good deal, but only because I'm doing the labor to make most of the repairs. The kicker on this deal is 1st poping out of gear. I've looked into getting it done at Transmission shops, and was horrified at quotes of $1850-2800. What that tells me is, I have not found a shop that knows what they are doing on a 4+3.

I'm hoping to remove it myself, tear it down, replace first gear, and reseal the tranny and overdrive, and reinstall. I'm hoping to pay $200 for the 1st gear, and not sure what a reseal kit for a 4+3 will cost....Maybe $100??? The deal I got is dependent on doing the tranny myself.

Good thing I have good mechanical aptitude when it come to taking things apart and putting them back together.

Maybe I'll document this with pictures and video to share with others interested in rebulding/resealing a 4+3.

Experience only happens when your involved.

If you have any experience you'd like to share please feel free

Chris

Well, I found a C4 junk yard in Southern California. This guy has about 26 C4's and is dismantling them. I got a C4 4+3 Tranny for my 86 for $cheap$.

I'm going to put it in and test, while i rebuild the original.

If your looking for a 1986 4+3, I will have an extra one in a month or two.
