Default New Owners' Father - What did she buy???

The daughter just came home with a '91 Vette and since I'll probably wind up being the one keeping it on the road, perhaps you gearheads can tell me what we've got here? The VIN number starts out 1G1YY3387M5xxxxxx. I know nothing about the history of this model or year so perhaps I can be enlightened. All I know is that it's a rag top with an automatic transmission and 107K miles. Hope she made a wise choice as I've got enough projects.

Welcome to CF!
That's a great lookin' C4 she picked out.
Right off the bat, I suggest that you get manuals on her '91.
If you go to www.ecklers.com you can get them for the specific year of her Vette.
We have some real sharp people here that will guide you along, just post any questions in the C4 Forum.

Thanks, I'm off to the C4 forum! I've found generic decoders for the VIN but haven't found specifics about the choices available at each digit/character position. Is this a forum question or can you help?

I don't have the decode info for the C4, but there are those here that do. The Chevrolet Shop Manual for a '91 Corvette has some of the decoding info you are looking for.

Here's a link that may help.

Here's what the vin means:

2ndManufacturerG=GM
3rd Make and Type1=Chevrolet passenger
4th Y=Corvette
5th Y=Corvette

8th 8=L98 engine
9th Check Digit
10th M=1991

Is this what you wanted to know or do you need more info?

Hi blueshark, I'm I burnt or what, when I first saw Mini's post I wrote down the information and figured I'd look it up later. Well later was today and I just posted it without realizing you had found a better sight first. Duh! PG.

Hey PG, it all helps brother. I was lazy and just posted the link, you went to the trouble of looking it up and typing it all out for him. I figure as long as we can help, that's all that matters. two heads are always better than one, right? so more info is better than just one source. I'm just glad I'm able to stumble on stuff I can share. Cheers
