5 speed transmission

RE: 5/6 speed transmission
I have purchased a Richmond Six speed for my 68 convertible and while it has not gone onto the frame yet, anticipate few problems. I have seen 66 and 67 coupes with them and they are awesome. I know there are other types of transmissions, but the Richmond seems closest to the M-22, being a somewhat noisy gearbox. See

for a look at a conversion. Its going to be costly, as M-22's aren't worth what a Richmond is, but with expensive Gas and high speeds on the freeway, a Stock 4 speed cannot compete.

RE: 5/6 speed transmission
I considered replacing my M20. with a Richmond 6 speed. This is what I was told. The center support must be modified and you must also replace the cluch and depending on the gear ratio maybe the differential as well. Apparently it is a major job in a mid year Vet. I have a couple of friends who have do the job. One in a 63 coupe and one with a 66 coupe.
To replace the M20 with a 5 speed Trimac, it bolts right in no modifications required, comes with everything included in the kit. So I have been told. My car is a numbers matching car so I decided to leave it alone. There is also a guy call "Rockcrusher Revived" that will modify your existing M20 or M21 4 speed and install an overdrive in place of the 4th gear. 4th becomes a rael dog. He advertises in a magazine called "Old Autos".

RE: 5/6 speed transmission
It's my understanding that the Richmond trannys are not a direct bolt in. The trans case is a bit larger and longer than the original Muncie. The trans mount may not be in the same spot either. The shift linkage may not fit cleanly through the tunnel. I do know for a fact that the Keisler prepped Tremec 5 speed is a direct bolt in.

RE: 5/6 speed transmission
hi my name is Rob. I'm new to this site and just read a post from Roadster about the muncie overdrive 4th gear being a "real dog", not so. I have new complete gearsets (Italian made) to go into your original muncie case, that have new and improved ratio's including an overdrive gearset. while the richmond is a nice trans it takes away from the originality of your ride. the overdrive gearset I install has a .86 overdrive in the third gear position, you would install the shift arm for 3-4 gear upside down. inside your car (truck) you would still shift 1 2 3 4, but your trans would now shift 1 2 4 3 (3rd being the overdrive) the new fourth gear (.86:1) would yeild you approx: a 500 rpm drop. this gearset in based on an m21 close ratio(2.20:1). this gearset is purpose built for economy. with only a 500 rpm drop in fourth gear your car will still be pretty peppy in high gear. if you want any information on this overdrive or any of the other new design gearsets i have, do not hesitate to ask through this forum or you can email me directly @ robbarnett@sympatico.ca==========thank you Rob
