Fuel Pump rebuild?
Hi C2/C3 Forum - I have a mutt 64 with a 67 mill, at least I know the block #s are telling me so. The VIN was removed prior to my purchase. The fuel pump went dead. I bought a Carter, doesn't fit. The fuel pump has a tag # M3972 (canada) and we would like to do a rebuild. Is it possible to replace diaphragm while it's still attached? This pump is a real pain to get to. Is there a kit available still for this pump? I sure would appreciate any tips you might have in these regards. Thanks so much! TheProf
Welcome to the forums. Not sure what luck you are going to have finding rebuild parts, check with auto part stores and see what they can tell you. These old car collectors are finding or making parts somehow. One option is to buy a fuel pump like the one you have, take the parts out of it and repair the one you have.
There is another way to get access to the fuel pump. remove the motor mount bolts, remove the radiator fan and maybe remove distributor cap if necessary. Use a block on the oil pan and raise the engine up, this should give you an easier access to the fuel pump,
While the fuel pump is a little bit of a pain to change, try going at it from the bottom. You may find it a little easier.
Don't forget to use the bolt that holds the fuel pump push rod up!
