Seeking Value Insights: 1958 Chevrolet Corvette
Hey Enthusiasts,
A work friend of mine who owns multiple Corvettes suggested this forum as the best place to get an accurate sense of value for my car. I’ve been trying to price it myself by looking at recent sales, but the values are all over the place, even for cars I’d consider equivalent to mine. I’d appreciate your help in narrowing down a realistic range.
Overview: This 1958 Chevrolet Corvette has been in my family since 1962, passed down from my father to my brother and then to me in 2000. It’s located in Huntsville, Alabama, and has been a family heirloom ever since.
Details:
Drivability: The car runs reliably, and I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it anywhere.

Overview: This 1958 Chevrolet Corvette has been in my family since 1962, passed down from my father to my brother and then to me in 2000. It’s located in Huntsville, Alabama, and has been a family heirloom ever since.
Details:
- Mileage: 27,627
- VIN: J58S107168
- Engine & Transmission: Original 283-cubic-inch V8 with a 3-speed manual transmission. Clutch replaced in 2010, with lifters adjusted and a tune-up in 2006. The starter needs work, as it doesn’t engage properly every time.
- Body & Paint: The body is solid, with a few scratches and some bubbling in the paint. It was repainted in the 1990s but retains its original color combination. I found photos of work done in the early 1970s (my older sister appears around 10 in them).
- Chrome & Trim: Good condition, showcasing the classic 1958 quad headlamps and chrome accents.
- Interior: Redone in the 1980s and still shows well. The AM radio powers on but doesn’t function.
- Soft Top: Includes both a hard and soft top; the soft top needs repair or replacement.
- Gauges & Features: Some gauges don’t work, and the speedometer cable needs replacement. Headlamps work fine, but the radio and wipers don’t.
- Tires: Fitted with vintage Goodyear F78-15 polyester cord tires for an authentic touch.
Drivability: The car runs reliably, and I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it anywhere.
Questions for the Forum:
- What’s the current market value for a '58 in this condition?
- Would non-functional features like the radio and some gauges significantly impact its value?
- How much does the long-term family ownership and history contribute to its overall value?

I can give you my opinion, I'm not an expert on car values. What you have is a real Gem, In Good condition but it wouldn't take much to fix the small issues and put it in excellent condition. Family history is always important. From looking at todays values it looks as if it's worth between 75 to 100K range, Hagerty has it valued at 77.7K more if it was in excellent condition.
In my opinion, and it's just that, family history makes a car more desirable to some people but it doesn't change the retail value. If you want to sell it fix everything you can. Enough small non working items and it becomes a project no matter how well it runs. Little things cost money, and if you're paying someone to fix them it gets expensive quickly and your price will suffer more than equally.
If you want a price guide go to Bring a trailer website and search sold listings for your car. Read the comments. This will give you a real idea of what cars actually sell for to real car people.

Welcome to the forum. Corvette Magazine publishes a Buyer's Guide every year. The one for this year lists a 1958 range from low price of $58,000 to a show ready price of $130,000. You can add $2,000 for the hardtop. I would say yours ranges between what they have listed as the average base price of $80,300 to a good condition price of $100,000. Good luck with your sale.
Thanks for the responses and the insight. I’ll get a copy of the Buyer’s Guide and check out the Bring a Trailer website.
It’s also come to my attention that some people can’t access the website I created. I believe you need a Google account to access it, and I understand some may not want to create one—GOOGLE! 😔 Did anyone else have trouble with the link?
Thanks
