It doesn't because of the big difference between R12 and R134a. Since R134a is not as efficient, it needs a larger condenser. That and the fact that even w/ R12, the Corvette A/C system won't freeze you out. It also operates at a higher pressure which means more leaks.
There's more to converting than just swapping gas. You need to purge all of the old oil since R134a uses a different oil. Need to put new charge fittings on. And to do it right, you'd need to replace all of the O-rings since they're not compatible w/ R134a and the new oil.
Probably be better to get one of those replacement systems. Can't recall the name of the company but they're used in a lot of resto-mods.
