Bouncing Tach
I have a 1970 w/300hp 350ci. The tach bounces pretty good on acceleration. I have read that in order to fix this it needs to be lubed. I have seen the adapter that can be bought and screwed on. Do I unscrew the tach at the distributor and attach the grease fitting there? If so is there a special grease that should be used? How much grease do I use? Can I also use that same fitting to lube up the speedometer cable? I am new to the forum and this is just the 1st of many questions I will have, looking forward to working with all of you.
I would think that you would put the fitting on the tach end.

Hi PTA, I purchased the 90 degree tach cable adapter a few years ago and it works fine. For me it eliminated the first tight turn caming out of the distributor, which is where it mounts and no more tach bounce, I lube my car overy two or three thousand miles and I put a few pumps of lube greese into the fitting.
As far as the speedo, no it will not fit but you can pull the speedo cable at the transmission, put it out greese it up and your done.PG

I had a similar problem with my 74. First the tach started bouncing and then it just went dead. I bought another cable online for $20.00 and installed it, problem solved.
I might pick up one of those 90 fittings like PG's talking about.

PG, thanks for the response, I will order my 90 degree adapter tonite. I don't follow you on the speedometer cable though, please go into a little more detail. I have an automatic if that matters. thanks again
Hi PTA, On page 12-10 in the Haynes manual there is a picture of where the speedometer cable connects to the transmission, just unscrew that round nut then you can pull out the cable. I would buy a new cable and lube it up as you shove it back in, when you get to the last 1 inch you may have to turn the cable so that the square on the cable lines up with the square in the speedometer.
This is not a hard repair. I say to change the cable now because if it brakes in two then you have to pull the drivers dash to remove the broken piece and that is a lot more work.
Sometimes tach or speedometer will bounce because of internal problems, but let's hope for the best and change the cable first.PG.
