Default Shifter Getting Stuck in neutral or Reverse

Sometime when I start my car I have a hard time getting the shifter out of reverse.
When I do get it into netural I then have a problem getting it into a forward gear.
If I shut the Vet off then restart everything is ok.
Could this be the interlock cable causing this problem?

Hi Schoon, I don't have any experience with tranny tear-down so I can't be much help with the internals. I do know from past experience that the clutch needs to be adjusted so it fully disengages when you push the peddle, if it wont completely disengage then the slight pressure that is still being transfered to the tranny will make it difficult to get into the gate when the car is at a standstill. I would adjust the clutch before I look at other possabilities.

I agree, and would like to add,....
Check your clutch linkage, and shifter linkage too.
Ya don't want any slop there.
Linkage, clutch adjustment and throwout bearing are common culprits.

Thanks for the info guys.

My 74 has what they call an interlock cable.
This is a cable from the steering column to the reverse shifter linkage.
In order to remove the key you need to be in reverse.
When you shift the car into reverse the cablle moves up and rotates the bottom part of the steering column allowing you to remove the key from the IG switch.
I think this cable is messed up and is causing my problems.
I am trying to find out what would happen if I remove the cable.

PS,
I have a Hurst Shifter and there is really no adjustment for the linkage.
The clutch has 1/2-3/4" play so that should be fine.

Schoon

If you remove the lockout cable, you might not be able to get the key out. Might need to go into the column and defeat the mechanism.

I had to disconnect the cable this weekend in order to shift the car out of reverse.
There is a plate that hooks on to the steering column that needs to be wired up to get the key out.
Shifts like a dream now.
