Default noise when in neutral

FIRST OFF I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT I JUST BOUGHT MY 1ST VETTE AFTER DROOLING OVER THEM SINCE I WAS 10 (34 NOW) FOUND 2002 VERT WITH 10,OOO MILES ON HER STILL SMELT NEW WHEN I CRACKED THE DOOR... HERE'S THE PROBLEM I'AM OUT THE FIRST NIGHT GET OUT OF THE CAR WITH IT IN NEUTRAL (6SPEED) AND I START TO HERE THIS NOISE SOUNDS LIKE A THROW OUT BEARING TO ME.. HAD COUPLE GO BAD IN 280Z AND CJ7 I GET IN THE CAR PUSH THE CLUTCH IN THE NOISE STOPS AND I,AM PISSED. TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER THE NOISE WILL NOT RESUME THEY SAY NOTHING IS WRONG. SO I TAKE THE CAR TO A VERY WELL LIKED TRANSMISSION GUY AROUND MY TOWN WHOM OWNS A 97 HE DROVE IT 2 DAYS AND SAYS THE NOISES THAT I,AM HEARING ARE NORMAL FOR THE 6SPEED BECAUSE OF THE LOW WEIGHT SYNTHETIC OIL THAT IS NOW USED IN TRANNY.. HE ALSO TELLS ME THIS IS NORMAL DON'T WORRY THAT MOST PEOPLE USUALLY DON'T LET THE TRANS IDLE IN NEUTRAL ... THE MORE I THINK ABOUT THAT IT SOUNDS LIKE BULL****.. SO DOES ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE HEAR THIS SOUND OR I,AM BEING TAKEN FOR RIDE... ANY HELP IS GOOD

First off congrats on your first Vette purchase and welcome to the site. As for the noise you are hearing I don't know what it is you are probably hearing, but I can tell you that I have a 6 speed and I don't hear anything when it is idling. I'm going to assume that you aren't getting the right information and I'm really bothered by the comment "most people usually don't let the trans idle in neutral," what other gear can you idle in without your foot on the clutch? Anyhow, I would definitely get a third opinion if I were you. Good luck.

noise at idle, I have a 2004 6 speed going through the same thing with the dealer, he showed me service bulitens where this is normal, this did not make this noise when I purchased it. Or I never would have purchased one I had told him if you depress the clutch it goes away and it sounds like a throw out bearing. as of now the dealer is going to try and get an approval for a new one, but he says no gaurantee. Ireally do not want them to take the car apart, in fear of other problems will arise. I thing for now I will live with it.

Classic signs of the throw out bearing! And yes, you are being "fed"!

Congratulations on your purchase.
This has to be a little upsetting, but work through it, and you'll be enjoying your ride in no time.

I have to agree with everyone else here, sounds like a bunch of BULL to me, I would insist that this is not normal, and it also sounds like a throw out bearing. I driven it my buddies 2004, 6 speed, and I hear no noise at idle, and what kind of Bull is that, Them telling you don't worry about it, most guys don't let their cars idle in neutral anyway??
WHAT A CROCK?

Keep taking it back till your satisfied

Good Luck!

It sounds like bull, but I have heard that throw out bearings on these cars start making noise early, but long before they fail. When and if you replace it, go aftermarket (SPEC, etc.) just to be sure, but you probably have some time.

Hi guys, first day on corvette forums! Great site! Well I hear the same noise on my '02 C5 6spd.. The dealer said when I bought it that his does the same (doesn't make it ok though). Ive been looking for opinions on this and it's all come to what you guys say about the throwout bearing. What do you guys suggest the OEM to be replaced with? Thanks for any input and recommendations.

Man!!
I'm sorry, but it's hard for me to believe that any noise like this would be "normal".
I doubt if every 6 speed out there has this noise, so If they don't have it, than why should "you".

Oh
Welcome "BlackVette02" hope your here for the long ride, your going to enjoy it.

Thanks gorichb! I'll be here for a while I agree with you.. If it was normal as they claim, then EVERY C5 manual transmission vette would make this noise.. bottom line, continue the fight with the dealers..haha. I'm still looking for suggestions as to what I should replace the OEM bearing with. Thanks all for any info.
